Sunflower oil vs palm oil is a question we get every week from food factories, bottlers, distributors and restaurant groups. Usually it comes with a price attached: palm is cheaper, so why pay more for sunflower? Sometimes it’s the opposite, when a buyer’s customers have started asking for “palm-free” on the label. We’re DThai Company Limited, and we sell refined, high oleic, crude and organic sunflower oil in bulk from Thailand. We don’t sell palm oil. So read this knowing which side we’re on, but we’ll be straight about where palm oil does the job better, because a buyer who picks the wrong oil doesn’t come back.

Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil in One Minute
If you only have a minute, here’s the short version of the sunflower oil vs palm oil choice.
- Sunflower oil is liquid, light, clear and neutral. It’s low in saturated fat and stays clear in the fridge. It’s the oil for bottles, salad dressings, mayonnaise and general cooking.
- Palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature and high in saturated fat. That makes it very stable in a fryer and useful for shortening, margarine and baked goods. It’s usually cheaper per ton.
- High oleic sunflower oil closes most of the frying gap. It’s nearly as stable as palm in a fryer but stays liquid and low in saturated fat.
The rest of this guide explains why, with the numbers buyers actually put in contracts.
Where Each Oil Comes From
Sunflower oil is pressed from sunflower seeds. Most of the world’s supply grows around the Black Sea, in Ukraine and Russia, with Argentina, the EU and Turkey also important. The sunflower oil article on Wikipedia covers the history and the plant if you’re curious.
Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm, grown mostly in Indonesia and Malaysia, with Thailand, Colombia and Nigeria producing smaller amounts. It’s the most produced vegetable oil in the world. There’s also palm kernel oil, pressed from the seed inside the fruit, which is a different, lauric oil and not what we’re comparing here. The palm oil article on Wikipedia covers its fractions and uses.
Where your oil comes from matters for the sunflower oil vs palm oil decision more than people think. Black Sea weather and shipping risks move sunflower prices. Indonesian export policy and biodiesel mandates move palm prices. A buyer who knows both stories can time purchases better.
Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil: Fat Profile
This is the core of the sunflower oil vs palm oil difference. Everything else, from texture to frying life to health claims, follows from the fatty acids.
| Fatty acid (typical %) | Regular sunflower oil | High oleic sunflower oil | Palm oil |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturated fat (total) | 9 to 13% | 7 to 10% | 45 to 55% |
| Palmitic acid (C16:0) | 5 to 8% | 3 to 5% | 39 to 47% |
| Oleic acid (C18:1) | 20 to 40% | 75 to 90% | 36 to 44% |
| Linoleic acid (C18:2) | 48 to 74% | 2 to 10% | 9 to 12% |
| State at 25°C | Liquid | Liquid | Semi-solid |
Regular sunflower oil is rich in linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fat. That gives it a light, liquid body, but polyunsaturated fat breaks down faster under heat and oxygen. Palm oil is about half saturated fat, mostly palmitic acid. That makes it solid in a cool room and very resistant to oxidation. High oleic sunflower oil swaps most of the linoleic acid for oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that handles heat well while staying liquid.
Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil for Frying
Frying is where most of the sunflower oil vs palm oil arguments happen, so let’s be specific.
Smoke point
Refined sunflower oil smokes at around 225 to 230°C. High oleic sunflower oil goes to about 232°C or a bit higher. Refined palm oil and palm olein smoke at roughly 230 to 235°C. For normal frying at 170 to 190°C, all three are well within range.
Frying life
Smoke point isn’t the full story. What decides how many days you get from a fryer is oxidative stability. Palm olein lasts a long time because of its saturated fat. Regular sunflower oil breaks down faster, gets darker and starts to smell sooner. High oleic sunflower oil sits close to palm olein in fryer life, which is why so many snack makers and quick service chains have moved to it.
Taste and feel
Sunflower oil leaves a lighter, cleaner finish on fried food. Palm can leave a slightly waxy coating on the tongue when food cools, which some buyers mind and some don’t. Crisps and fries fried in palm stay crisp a little longer on the shelf, though.
If your question is sunflower oil vs palm oil for a deep fryer that runs all day, our honest answer is high oleic sunflower oil if you can pay a bit more, and palm olein if the lowest cost per fry is the only thing that counts. Regular sunflower oil works well for home cooking and lighter restaurant use, and that’s where the sunflower oil vs palm oil gap matters least.
Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil in Food Manufacturing
Different products need different oils, and the sunflower oil vs palm oil choice changes from one production line to the next.
- Bakery and pastry. Palm and palm fractions give structure to puff pastry, biscuits and cream fillings. Liquid sunflower oil can’t do that on its own, though it works well in cakes, muffins and breads.
- Margarine and spreads. Palm is the usual hard fat. Sunflower oil is often blended in to make spreads softer and lower the saturated fat.
- Mayonnaise and dressings. Sunflower oil wins clearly. It stays liquid and clear in the fridge, where palm would cloud and separate.
- Instant noodles and snacks. Palm olein dominates on cost and stability. High oleic sunflower oil is growing where “palm-free” sells.
- Chocolate and confectionery coatings. Palm fractions are hard to replace for snap and melt.
- Canned fish and ready meals. Sunflower oil is common, because it stays liquid and looks clean in the can.
For a lot of factories the real answer to sunflower oil vs palm oil is “both,” each for the job it’s good at.
Health and Labeling
We’re oil traders, not doctors, so we’ll stick to what affects how your product sells.
Most health authorities advise keeping saturated fat low. On that measure sunflower oil scores far better than palm oil, and many buyers choose it so they can print “low in saturated fat” on the pack. High oleic sunflower oil also carries a strong monounsaturated fat story, much like olive oil.
Palm oil has defenders too. Red palm oil is rich in carotenes and vitamin E, and palm contains tocotrienols. But refined palm oil loses most of the carotenes during refining.
Refining also forms process contaminants, glycidyl esters and 3-MCPD esters. These form in all refined oils, but palm oil tends to run higher. The EU and several other markets set limits, so if you export finished food to Europe, ask any supplier for test results.
On the label, many European and some Asian retailers now push “palm-free” products, and some consumers look for it. In other markets nobody cares. Know your shelf before you decide on sunflower oil vs palm oil for a retail line.
Sustainability and Supply Risk
Palm oil carries a deforestation story, fair or not, and big brands often require certified sustainable palm through the RSPO system. That adds paperwork and cost. Sunflower oil doesn’t carry that baggage, but it has its own risk: so much supply comes from the Black Sea that a war, a drought or a closed shipping corridor can move the price fast.
The smart buyer of either oil keeps more than one source. That’s one reason buyers in Asia, Africa and the Middle East have started buying sunflower oil shipped from Thailand. It’s another origin to lean on when Black Sea supply gets tight.
Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil by Market
The sunflower oil vs palm oil balance looks different depending on where you sell. Here’s what we see from our own customers.
Middle East
Gulf and Levant buyers use a lot of sunflower oil for home cooking and retail bottles, and a lot of palm olein for restaurants and bakeries. Shoppers there know sunflower oil by name and expect it on the shelf. Ramadan pushes demand for both oils up sharply, so book early.
Africa
In West and East Africa, palm oil is part of the food culture, and red palm oil is a cooking staple in many homes. Refined palm olein is the cheap frying oil. Sunflower oil sells in supermarkets and to middle-income households as the “lighter” choice, and that segment keeps growing. For an African distributor, the sunflower oil vs palm oil question is usually about carrying both at different price points.
Europe
European retail leans hard toward sunflower and rapeseed oil, and palm-free labels are common. Food factories still use palm fractions, almost always certified sustainable. If you export finished goods to Europe, sunflower oil saves you a lot of label and certification work.
Asia
South and Southeast Asia run largely on palm oil because it’s grown nearby and it’s cheap. India switches between the two depending on the spread, buying more sunflower oil when the premium narrows and more palm when it widens. Sunflower oil sells at the premium end in Chinese, Korean and Japanese retail.
Questions to Ask Before You Choose
Before you settle the sunflower oil vs palm oil question for a product line, answer these honestly.
- Does my product need a solid fat for structure, or does it need a liquid oil?
- How many hours a day does my fryer run, and what does a fryer change cost me in oil and labor?
- Will my customers pay more for a low saturated fat or palm-free label?
- Do I store oil in a warm or a cool warehouse?
- What happens to my business if one origin’s supply is cut for three months?
If most of your answers point to liquid oil, labels and simple storage, the sunflower oil vs palm oil choice is already made. If they point to solid fat and lowest cost, palm is likely your oil for that line, and you can still use sunflower oil for the rest. Either way, a sample trial settles the sunflower oil vs palm oil debate faster than any spec sheet.
Price: Sunflower Oil vs Palm Oil per Ton
Palm oil is usually the cheaper of the two. Through 2025 and 2026 sunflower oil has mostly traded at a premium of a few hundred dollars per ton over palm oil, and at times that gap hit record levels when the Black Sea crop came in small. The spread narrows when sunflower supply recovers or when palm prices rise on biodiesel demand in Indonesia.
When you compare sunflower oil vs palm oil on price, don’t stop at the price per ton.
- Compare cost per day of frying, not per ton. High oleic sunflower oil that lasts nearly as long as palm olein can come out close.
- Count the price your label earns. A “low saturated fat” or “palm-free” claim can justify a higher shelf price.
- Count logistics. Palm oil may need heated tanks or heating in flexitanks in cool climates. Sunflower oil doesn’t.
- Count the risk. One origin is cheaper until it isn’t.

Storage and Handling
Here’s another practical side of sunflower oil vs palm oil that buyers often overlook. Palm oil starts to set below about 30°C. In a cool warehouse or a winter port it turns cloudy and then solid, so bulk palm needs heating coils in tanks or heating pads under flexitanks before discharge. Palm olein is more liquid but still clouds in the cold.
Sunflower oil stays liquid down to a few degrees above freezing and needs no heating. It does need protection from light, heat and air, because its polyunsaturated fat oxidizes faster. Keep it in sealed containers, out of the sun, below 25°C if you can, and use stock in rotation.

When We’d Tell You to Buy Palm Instead
This might sound strange from a sunflower seller, but it’s how we keep customers. If your only goal is the lowest cost per kilo of frying fat, your market doesn’t care about labels, and you make biscuits, puff pastry or instant noodles, palm oil may well be the better buy for that line. We’d rather tell you that and supply your bottling and dressing lines with sunflower oil than sell you the wrong product.
In most other cases, the sunflower oil vs palm oil decision leans toward sunflower: retail cooking oil, mayonnaise and dressings, canned food, restaurants with lighter menus, any brand that sells on health or on “palm-free,” and any fryer where high oleic sunflower oil’s longer life covers the price gap.
How Buyers Switch From Palm to Sunflower
Several of our customers moved from palm olein to sunflower oil over the last few years. The ones who did it smoothly followed roughly these steps.
- Run a fryer trial with high oleic sunflower oil next to your current palm olein, same food, same temperature, and track days to discard.
- Do a taste and shelf-life test on the finished product.
- Check your label claims and price your new line to cover the oil cost.
- Start with one container and lock in a contract once the trial works.
We send samples for exactly this kind of trial. More on how we compare grades is in our post on refined vs crude sunflower oil, and our sunflower oil supplier Thailand guide covers how to vet any supplier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is sunflower oil healthier than palm oil?
On saturated fat, yes. Sunflower oil has about 10% saturated fat and palm oil about 50%. Most dietary advice favors the lower figure.
Which lasts longer in a fryer, sunflower oil vs palm oil?
Palm olein lasts longer than regular sunflower oil. High oleic sunflower oil comes close to palm olein and often matches it in real kitchens.
Why is palm oil cheaper?
Oil palms yield far more oil per hectare than any other oil crop, so production cost per ton is lower.
Can I replace palm oil with sunflower oil in baking?
In cakes, breads and muffins, yes. In puff pastry, laminated dough and cream fillings you need a solid fat, so sunflower oil alone won’t work.
Does sunflower oil go solid in cold weather?
No. It stays liquid and clear down to a few degrees above freezing. Palm oil clouds and sets below about 30°C.
Is the sunflower oil vs palm oil choice different for halal markets?
No. Both are plant oils and both are halal. We can supply a halal certificate with our sunflower oil when your market asks for it.
What’s the minimum order for your sunflower oil?
One 20ft container, either in bottles, jerry cans, drums or a flexitank.
The sunflower oil vs palm oil question doesn’t have one right answer for every buyer, but it usually has a clear answer for each product line. If your line needs a clean, liquid, low saturated fat oil, or a frying oil that sells without the palm label, that’s what we sell. Contact us with your grade, packing and destination port, and we’ll send a sample and a quote. You can also browse all our grades on the sunflower oil for sale page.
